Gail Myers leads Team Turbo to Tournament Lead

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In a flurry of strikes few will ever be fortunate enough to see, Gail Myers Jr. rolled a season-high 840 series to lead Turbo 2-N-1 Grips to an all-time Madison (Wisconsin) Bowling Association record 3,713 scratch series on the opening day of the Milwaukee Bowling Association (MBA) Championships Saturday, January 17th.   Myers rolled games of 285, 257 and 298.

Team mate, Marc McDowell added 773, which included his 36th career perfect game followed by games of 225 and 248.  Jeff Richgels came along for the ride with 749 (237-278-234), Kevin Thompson had 711 (269-237-205), and Scott Erickson, who was subbing for Jeff Prein, adjusted nicely the last game after struggling the first two for 640 (203-179-258).

Combined Team Turbo scored games of 1,294, 1,176 and 1,243; total 3,713. With the MBA's handicap system of 100 percent based off a 230 average, Team Turbo earned an additional 96 pins and totaled of 3,809.  The prior MBA scratch team record was 3,577 by Silver Eagle Lounge in the 1998 MBA Championships.

Myers, McDowell and Richgels are part of the Turbo team that won the 2005 USBC Open Championships Team All-Events and finished second in 2007.  The other members are Steve Richter of Sheboygan and Mike Shady of Fairview Heights, Penn., and formerly Ripon.  Thompson and Erickson are part of the Team Pabst team that led the USBC Team All-Events last year for several weeks.

The 3,713 does not quite crack the top 10 all-time for Wisconsin. The top score is 3,823 by Bisbee's Golf Center at Riviera Lanes in Green Bay on Dec. 8, 2007, while 10th is 3,739.

Details on the MBA Championships are here while standings are here.
